Fort Greene buildings

Built for Fort Greene’s buildings

Fort Greene is mostly 19th-century rowhouses in a landmarked historic district around Fort Greene Park, with prewar apartment buildings and, toward Downtown Brooklyn and the BAM area, newer condominium towers.

Brownstones & Italianate rowhouses

Houses with high parlor-floor ceilings, plaster moldings, arched openings and marble mantels, where bookcases, window seats and closets are drawn to sit with the original details, and alcoves beside the chimney breast become built-in storage.

Garden levels & duplexes

Lower floors with lower ceilings, exposed brick and steps down from the street, often turned into kitchens and family rooms, where cabinetry is sized for the ceiling height and the narrow entry under the stoop.

Prewar co-ops

Older apartment buildings on and near the park, where the co-op board and an alteration agreement set what can be done, and when, and service-elevator size limits how big each piece can be.

New condominium towers

Recent buildings near BAM, Flatbush Avenue and the edge of Downtown Brooklyn, where owners replace builder-grade closets and kitchens, and deliveries follow the management’s loading dock schedule.

Planning

Planning millwork in a Fort Greene building

  • Stoop, front-door, stair and turn clearances in rowhouses, checked before pieces are sized
  • Co-op board approval and alteration agreements in prewar buildings
  • Service elevator size, loading dock times and work hours in condominium towers
  • Fitting new work to original moldings, mantels and plaster walls

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you build for Fort Greene brownstones?

Yes. We build bookcases, kitchens, closets and other built-ins for rowhouses, co-ops and condominiums throughout Fort Greene, from our shop at 4014 1st Ave in Industry City, Brooklyn.

How do large pieces get into a rowhouse?

Each piece is sized to pass the stoop, front door, stair and tightest turn on the way to its room. Those are measured with the room itself before anything is made, and larger runs are built in sections.

Can you work within my co-op or condo’s rules?

Yes. We build to the approved drawings and plan delivery around your building’s service elevator, loading times and permitted work hours.

How do we get started?

Send drawings, photos or measurements through our contact page, or call 718-483-5274, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
