Cobble Hill buildings

Built for Cobble Hill’s rowhouses

Most of Cobble Hill is a historic district of brick and brownstone rowhouses from the mid-1800s, with a few early apartment complexes, carriage houses and small walk-ups mixed in.

Brownstones & brick rowhouses

Greek Revival and Italianate houses with high-stoop entries, parlor floors with tall ceilings and original moldings, where bookcases and cabinetry are fitted around mantels, pocket doors and windows.

Garden & top-floor rentals

Rowhouses split into a duplex and rental floors, where closets and kitchens have to work in narrow rooms and every piece goes up the same tight stair.

Carriage houses & mews

Small converted stables and mews houses on the side streets, with low ceilings, odd footprints and storage built into stair runs and eaves.

Walk-ups & early apartment blocks

Late-1800s apartment buildings and mixed-use walk-ups along Court Street and Henry Street, with compact rooms and no elevator for deliveries.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do large pieces get into a Cobble Hill brownstone?

Cabinets and built-ins are built in sections sized to the narrowest point on the way in, whether that is the stoop door, a stair turn or a landing. Those clearances are confirmed with the final measurements before anything is made.

Can built-ins be fitted to walls that are not straight?

Yes. Pieces are built to site measurements and scribed on site to uneven walls, floors and ceilings, which is normal in 19th-century rowhouses.

How far is Cobble Hill from your shop?

Our shop is at 4014 1st Avenue in Industry City, Sunset Park, a short drive from Cobble Hill. Pieces are delivered by truck on a scheduled day.

Which of your services suit a rowhouse?

Custom millwork for kitchens, bookcases and alcove built-ins; aluminum & glass systems for closets and cabinet doors; and Planika bioethanol fireplaces for rooms without a working chimney.
