West Village buildings

Built for the West Village’s older buildings

Much of the West Village is 19th-century housing on irregular streets, where rooms are compact, closets are few and getting a cabinet inside is part of the design.

Federal & Greek Revival rowhouses

Early townhouses with tall parlor floors, smaller rooms above and stairs that turn tightly, where built-ins are often made in sections and fitted around fireplaces, windows and original trim.

Walk-ups & tenements

Five- and six-story walk-up buildings with small apartments and little or no closet space, where wardrobes, bed-wall storage and kitchen cabinetry have to use every inch.

Prewar co-ops

Elevator buildings with doormen, managing agents and alteration agreements, where drawings are approved before work begins and deliveries follow the building’s schedule.

Converted and riverside buildings

Former industrial buildings and newer condominiums toward the Hudson, with higher ceilings and open rooms that suit full-height storage and glass-front closets.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you build cabinetry for a walk-up apartment?

Yes. Pieces are sized to the narrowest stair, landing and doorway on the way up, which are measured along with the room before anything is made. Larger units are built in sections.

How do deliveries work on West Village streets?

Pieces are built in our Industry City shop and brought in by truck on a scheduled day. Because parking and unloading space is limited, delivery is planned around the street and the building’s access.

Do you work with co-op alteration agreements?

Yes. We build to the drawings approved by your board or managing agent and plan delivery around the building’s service entrance, elevator and permitted hours.

What helps most in a small West Village apartment?

Usually built-in closets and wardrobes, bed-wall and window-seat storage, and kitchen cabinetry that runs to the ceiling. Glass-front aluminum doors keep storage from making a small room feel closed in.
