City Island homes

Built for City Island’s houses

City Island is a small island in Long Island Sound, reached by a single bridge from Pelham Bay Park. One main avenue runs its length, with short residential streets running off it toward the water on both sides.

Victorian & older wood-frame houses

Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century houses with clapboard or shingle siding, original trim and rooms that have settled over time, where built-ins are scribed to walls and floors that are not square.

Cottages & small houses

Compact former summer cottages and small houses on tight lots, where storage has to work hard: window seats, built-in closets, under-stair cabinets and kitchens that use every inch of a short wall.

Waterfront houses

Houses on the water side of the side streets, facing the Sound or Eastchester Bay, where large windows, damp air and sun shape material and finish choices for cabinetry and closets.

Condos & shops on City Island Avenue

Newer condominiums and townhouse groupings, plus the shops and storefronts along the avenue, with closets, kitchens, shelving and wall displays built to the drawings.

Planning

Planning millwork for a City Island house

  • Truck access over the City Island Bridge and parking on narrow side streets on delivery day
  • Doorways, porches and steep stairs in older houses, measured before pieces are sized
  • Materials and finishes chosen with humidity and salt air near the water in mind
  • Scribing to settled floors, plaster walls and original trim

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you build for City Island houses?

Yes. We build cabinetry, built-ins and closets for older houses, cottages, waterfront homes and condominiums on City Island, from our shop in Industry City, Brooklyn.

How does delivery to City Island work?

Pieces are built in Brooklyn and delivered by truck over the City Island Bridge on a scheduled day. Street width, parking and the route into the house are reviewed beforehand, and installation is coordinated with your contractor or installation team.

Can built-ins fit an older house that is not square?

Yes. Pieces are built to final site measurements and drawings, so they can be scribed to walls, floors and ceilings that have shifted over the years.

Can a Planika fireplace go in a house without a working chimney?

Planika bioethanol fireplaces need no chimney or gas line. Requirements for room size, air circulation and clearances vary by model and are confirmed before ordering.
